Venezuela man charged in attempting to steal a plane in Hilo

He’s expected to return to court Wednesday. 24-year-old Gabriel Arjona Molina from Venezuela was charged with attempted theft on the Big Island for trying to steal an air ambulance plane at Hilo International Airport on Friday.

A witness alerted a South Hilo patrol officer who saw a vehicle crashed through the fence at the airport. The driver then parked next to a fixed-winged single-engine aircraft, exited the vehicle, and attempted to manually spin the aircraft’s propeller.





The suspect then approached a Beechcraft King Air C90A aircraft parked on the ramp. He entered the cockpit where he was able to start both engines before he was arrested. The aircraft is worth about $1,500,000.
